Grooming
Daily brushing is a
good idea for the Samoyed, with a thorough combing and brushing once a
week.
History
The Samoyed name comes
from the Nenets people of Siberia. These nomadic reindeer herders bred
the fluffy white, smiling dog to help with herding, to pull sleds when
they were on the move and also to keep their owners warm at night by
sleeping on top of them. This habit remains in the Samoyed temperament
to this day.
Positives
Samoyeds enjoy the
company of people, especially children. The Samoyed adapts very well to
other pets i.e dogs and also cats if introduced early. The Samoyed
always knows if someone is about and will very quickly let you know too.
The Samoyed has no
doggy smell. Bathing of the Samoyed is not recommended every week;
just a quick brush will keep your Samoyed looking clean and fresh.
Negatives
Grooming is an
essential part of Samoyed maintenance. This is especially so during
major drops of undercoat, which occur once or twice a year depending on
weather. The Samoyed can be very independent and also very vocal. They
need lots of family attention, exercise, toys to keep them amused and
training - all of which will help to keep your Samoyed out of trouble.
