Color
Official Collie
colours are: Sable and White, Blue Merle, and tri-colour.
There are also
White Collies, with tri-coloured or sable heads, depending on what
colour collies were involved in the mating. The White Collie however
is not a recognised colour in Australia and New Zealand. The United
States does recognise the White collie, where they
are bred and shown; they also have an official White Collie Club.
Sable and White
collies range in colour -from Golden sables, through to rich
mahogany, shaded sables, or black-tipped sables - due to tri-factor
i.e from a mating with a tri-colour.
Grooming
Rough Coated
Collies need daily brushing, whereas the Smooth Coated Collie only needs
to be brushed occasionally.
History
The Collie is
thought to have originated as a cross between the dogs of the invading
Romans and those of the native Scottish shepherds. The two sub-types
(Rough and Smooth Coat) that have subsequently developed are used for
different aspects of livestock work.
Positives
Collies are a
gentle, sensitive dog, and are very caring towards their owner's family.
They love to exercise, so be prepared for both morning and afternoon
walks!
Negatives
As Collies were
developed as a working dog, they need a solid amount of exercise every
day. Thus they need a household to match.
