| Grooming The Alaskan Malamute has a double coat, a thick woolly undercoat and a Guard coat. The Guard coat varies in length and the normal coat is about 1 to 2 Inches. However a soft coat or 'long' coat has a much bigger coat often laying down on the back. This coat especially requires intense grooming when the dog is shedding. Failing to groom the
coat out in this time will leave the dog in knotty mats down to the
skin, this dead undercoat blocks the air to the skin and can accelerate
skin irritations such as 'hot spots' (skin dermatitis). |
